From the recording Down Under The Sun

Got a minute? (This might qualify me as finally off the deep end to some of you): When my mom was still alive, in the care center, as I left her room late one night and walked down the hallway to the elevator, the words "down under the sun" came into my mind. I wasn't sure if I heard them or not, but I had just passed a used book case and figured I had read a book title. Those words stayed in my head till the next day when I went up and checked every book there. Nothing said "down under the sun". So, I had been wanting to write something about climate change, and this seemed like a good start, so I wrote. It was not a cheerful song at all, and I took it over to my friend, Charlie Schwartz and sang it to him. He said "you sound angry". I said "I know it, it's not very good is it?" He says nope. The next thing he said after a brief silence was "Do you have a Bible at home?" "Yes, I think so" "Go read Ecclesiastes" "Huh?" "Go read it, and then write the song". "OK", and I did. And it kinda pissed me off, and I disagreed with it and went back and told him. He was overjoyed. He says "You GOT it! Now go write the song!" What was funny about the whole thing was every verse of the danged thing said "Down under the sun" "Chase after the wind" and "It's all so meaningless" and stuff like that. Who was it that originally put those words in my head, anyway? Hmmmm? Oh, and by the way, the line "I might be getting older but I ain't done yet" is something I heard Lloyd Jones say one night I opened for him. Hope you dont mind, Lloyd. So, God, Lloyd and the rest of you: this is what I came up with. Hope you like it. I do.

Lyrics

Down under the sun
Seems like it's way too hot
I see the weather's not like it used to be
In the last fifty years
It's getting very very clear to me

Chase after the wind
Yeah, rock me again
I might be getting older
But I ain't done yet

Down under the sun
There was a time when
I had to know just why
Things are like they are
It doesn't matter now
More importantly
Can you tell me how
Things are going to be?

Chase after the wind
Yeah, rock me again
I might be getting older
But I ain't done yet

And if your good book says
It's all so meaningless
I may disagree
'Cuz of the love you bring
Could mean a lot of things
Ah, but meaningless?
There just ain't no way

Chase after the wind
Yeah, rock me again
I might be getting older
But I ain't done yet

Down under the sun (under the sun)
Down under the sun (under the sun)
Down under the sun (under the sun)
Down under the sun (under the sun)
